AIDS 2000 raises thousands of pounds at Gala Ball
NORTHERN Ireland charity AIDS 2000 raised thousands of pounds at their annual Red Ribbon Gala Ball at the Europa Hotel, Belfast.
Now in it's sixth year, the glitzy event was attended by a host of celebrities, including the charity's patron Alex Best, soccer legend George Best's sister Julie, BBC presenter Denise Watson, Ozzy Osborne's nephew hair stylist Terry Longden, and supporter of the charity, MP for North Down, Lady Sylvia Hermon.
The black tie event auctioned off an array of prizes including Northern Ireland and Sheffield United footballer Keith Gillespie's football shorts and model Alex Best's dress, which was designed by local fashion designer Julie-Ann Crooks. Alex's red gown was bought by Sam Duffy from S&R Electrics for £500.
The charity, started by celebrity agent Colin Angus, works across Northern Ireland to raise awareness and funds for people and families infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.
Founder Colin Angus said: "This year's Red Ribbon Ball was a great success. We raised thousands of pounds and had a fantastic night too!
"The support we have received over the last six years has been overwhelming and the gala evening gave me the opportunity to thank everyone who has been behind us from the start".
Alex Best has been a patron of AIDS 2000 since the beginning.
She added: "I've seen first hand how AIDS 2000 helps people affected by HIV/AIDS and I'm really proud to be a part of the charity.
"After the Gala Ball on Saturday, I know we have got the support we need to continue the great work of the charity".

29-03-07 - AIDS 2000 campaigner warns of AIDS time bomb on World AIDS Day
THE American Consulate of Northern Ireland and Lady Sylvia Hermon met with AIDS 2000 today in a joint effort to create awareness of HIV and AIDS in Northern Ireland on World AIDS Day.
Howard Dean Pittman, US Consulate General Belfast, Lady Sylvia Hermon, MP for North Down and Colin Angus, chairman of Aids 2000 gathered at the American Consulate in Belfast to discuss an awareness and fundraising action plan for 2007.
Currently over 600 people are living with HIV in Northern Ireland and in recent years there have been over 100 Aids related deaths.
Speaking today (Friday) Howard Dean Pittman said it was imperative to continue to aggressively confront the world wide pandemic.
He added: "Because of initiatives like World AIDS Day, the international community is more aware of the causes and consequences of HIV/AIDS. Yet, local and international statistics confirm that we all must continue to aggressively confront the pandemic.
"The US is committed to this goal, having recently invested $15 billion in countries that have been most heavily affected. No region is immune to the dangers of AIDS and we pay tribute to Lady Sylvia Hermon, local groups like AIDS 2000, and others who are confronting the disease through education, treatment, and care. Collectively they are helping the global fight to eradicate one of the biggest human tragedies in our history".
Colin Angus said he felt it was important for organisations like Aids 2000, politicians and representatives to work together to promote a responsible lifestyle to all sections of the community.
"We always do a big campaign on World AIDS Day to highlight AIDS 2000 and this year we have joined forces with Lady Sylvia Hermon and the American Consulate to raise awareness about AIDS in Northern Ireland", he said.
"A lot of people believe there is no HIV and AIDS problem in Northern Ireland they see it as a major problem only in America and Africa, but Northern Ireland is as big a part of the world as those countries and it is here in this country.
"In Northern Ireland AIDS is a time bomb. We want people to educate themselves about safe sex, HIV and AIDS, and encourage them to live a healthy and safe lifestyle.
"On World AIDS Day we want to say to people to listen and take notice of the day".
Lady Sylvia Hermon, is a strong supporter of AIDS 2000 and also works closely with the American Consulate.
She said: "Events such as today's serve an important role in highlighting the very serious issue of AIDS.
"People should remember that HIV/AIDS is not just a third world issue. It is a growing problem in Northern Ireland too, where we currently have several hundred men, women and children as sufferers.
"Since the current NHS campaign on safe sex clearly isn't working, I'm calling today for the Government to rethink its policy urgently".
Patron of AIDS 2000, Alex Best, added: "Over the years AIDS 2000 have raised tens of thousands of pounds for sufferers of the terminal disease and it's vitally important that we both raise funds and awareness of this deadly disease.
"This is not just an issue for one part of the Northern Ireland community, last year for example the number of heterosexual transmissions of HIV in Northern Ireland rose rapidly and for the first year ever overtook any other method of transmission.
"I've seen first hand how AIDS 2000 helps people affected by HIV/AIDS and I'm really proud to be a part of the charity".

Alex Best - Patron of AIDS2000
Alex Best is the Patron of AIDS 2000 - the wife of the soccer legend the late George Best, said how she was shocked by the level of ignorance of the disease.
Alex said she was thrilled to accept an invitation to be Patron of Ulster's main AIDS charities, AIDS 2000.
"I'm absolutely honoured and delighted to support AIDS 2000.
It's especially important to me because it is a Northern Ireland Charity. I will continue to visit the province to help support the charity and fundraise whenever I can."
Alex had lived in London before moving to Northern Ireland and was surprised at the stigma in Ulster which forces those with the disease to needlessly live in a life
of shame.
"I hope I can break down the barriers and raise awareness of AIDS in Northern Ireland and the U.K." - she said.
"I was shocked at the level of ignorance here, especially at how little people know about AIDS, and that most people still think it is a problem which only exists in the gay community.
The fact is that the number of cases among heterosexual couples is rising."

Alex Best has just released her life story "ALWAYS ALEX"
and talks about her role and involvement as Patron of Donaghadee based Co.Down Charity AIDS2000
Alex lived here on the Co.Down coast for over a year and in such a short period of time became strongly involved with AIDS2000 an AIDS charity set up by Bangor Man, Colin Angus.
Alex talks about how she became involved by becoming friends with Colin and taking part in a parachute jump from thirteen thousand feet! and helping to arrange the charities annual RED RIBBON BALL..all to raise funds for counselling services and daily needs for people who are HIV positive and for respite days for families and partners. Alex goes on to mention that there is still a stigma attached to the condition and a lot of ignorance surrounding it, meaning that people with HIV find it hard to get help and support.
Alex agreed to become Patron of the charity as at the time when she was married to George and as he is held in such high regard in Northern Ireland, that the fact I was his wife and was involved with the charity, it helped to boost its profile considerably....
Alex felt is was important to write about the AIDS2000 Charity in her book to raise more awareness and ensure that people still knew she will continue to support AIDS2000 and maintain her role as Patron and the important work it carries out in the province.
